Professional profile

Mr John Knight provides a comprehensive colorectal practice for patients with colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, rectal prolapse and benign conditions. His specialist interest is laparoscopic or ‘keyhole’ surgery. In this area he performs laparoscopic bowel surgery and laparoscopic hernia repair. He is also a member of the regional carcinoid group providing specialist surgical treatment for patients with these unusual tumours.

 

Mr Knight trained in London at St Bartholomew’s Hospital between 1990 and 1996. His surgical training included a senior house officer rotation at Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, Specialist Registrar surgical training in Wessex and a sabbatical at one of the National Laparoscopic training units in Colchester.

 

Mr Knight has worked as a consultant surgeon at both Spire Southampton and Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust since April 2008. During his time at Southampton he has further developed the laparoscopic colorectal service including the implementation of the Enhanced Recovery Programme for patients undergoing major laparoscopic surgery.

Training and education

I graduated from St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, London in 1996. I completed my specialist registrar surgical training in Wessex and have visited the National Laparoscopic Training Unit in Colchester.

Experience

Mr Knight has worked for Southampton University Hospitals Trust since April 2008.

 

I was appointed to Southampton University Hospitals Trust in 2008 to further develop the laparoscopic colorectal service. I provide services for treating colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease & benign proctology and am a member of the regional carcinoid disease service. I also perform colonoscopy, laparoscopic hernia surgery and emergency surgery on the on-call general surgery take.

Key achievements

Implementation of the Enhanced Recovery After Laparoscopic Surgery (ERALS) Programme – Regional finalist at 2009 South Central Health & Social Care Awards.

Personal profile

Mr John Knight is married to his wife Kate who is a GP and they have 2 children. They live in the New Forest enjoying the surrounding countryside. He is a keen cyclist, mountain biking regularly both locally and across the country.
